clearview cinemas hoboken is actually happening!

Today is quite possibly the most exciting day that HH has had since moving to our quaint little corner of Hoboken. Today is the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Clearview Cinemas Hoboken located on 14th and Adams Street. Everyone will be there, except of course, for me. Because someone has to pay the bills around here and I can't just simply blow off the day job, no matter how excited I may be about this. Seriously, HH is a big movie buff, and the idea of walking a few blocks to see my favorite movies, blockbusters, independents and art house films, gets me as excited as a kid getting to eat two desserts after dinner.

Let's hope Mayor Roberts isn't expensing a giant pair of platinum Tiffany scissors and hand sewn red silk ribbon flown in from Paris for this ceremony, because frankly if anything else gets crammed into our Q4 tax bill, then we won't be able to afford $13 popcorn and Diet Cokes come springtime!

Our new 1 story shopping center going up across from our future movie theater, and next to the 14th Street viaduct, is moving at a glacial pace.

That big mound of dirt on the north side will be the parking lot area:


It's spring, let's get this party started already!


Maybe someone needs to stop by with her blow torch and light a fire under the contractor's keister!

the 14th street viaduct

This is the under belly of the 14th Street viaduct. It connects Hoboken (entrance at Willow Street) with Jersey City Heights and Union City, and was built in 1910. Could use a fresh coat of paint! This viaduct was originally built to help ease the schlep of goods and services, and it is still in use today. In fact, from what I can gather, it's part of an ongoing $92 million upgrade and renovation. Here are a few more pics:





At first I saw these bumper stickers and thought - that's strange, I've never seen any propaganda geared towards sprinklers. Then I realized they were for the local sprinkler union - who appear to be Democrats :)



Beyond the viaduct, looking north, there is a ton of real estate for sale. Tons of small businesses, abandoned buildings, and open land are available. There was recently a town hall meetings scheduled to discuss the redevelopment of this area, but it was postponed at the last minute. I'll let you know when it's rescheduled. Some people will look at places like the 14th Street viaduct as the perfect canvas for self expression. Jerry used this opportunity to let us know how to spell his first name:


Just a thought - when thinking about tagging pubic or private property, which last I checked is illigal, it may be a smart idea not to spray paint your full name, INCLUDING YOUR MIDDLE INITIAL. Just a gut feeling there. Jerry might as well tape his drivers license and social security card to the back seat of a cop car:


Carpe Diem is an Irish pub that's tucked under the viaduct. It looks very charming:

Under the viaduct, there is no pavement - it's old cobblestones. Wonder how old they are?

Directly south of the viaduct is the home of the proposed five screen movie theater that is supposedly being built:


And directly across the street is a sign that says parking and retail is on it's way. Anyone have a date of completion on this one??
