man down! man down!

A mysterious tree vandal? Or simply a case of a shallow root system and absolutely no tree stake support? We'll never know for sure, but there's a casualty on 9th Street outside of Fields Crossing. Can she be saved? Let's see how many days it takes to get someone over to repair or replace!

isn't this just a given?

11th and Jefferson...

MIA shopping cart alert!

yes it is really november

Strange sight for November, huh? Remember all those trees and shrubbery that 1000 Jefferson planted last month? Well all the trees along Madison Street have started flowering:

Global warming may be royally screwing up the planet, but at least things look pretty while we're on our way to hell in a flower basket.

what, no face paint?

Hungry Shoprite shoppers recently enjoyed an exuberant display of Washington Redskins fan worship. He's really into it! If I was a Hoboken traffic cop I would give him special treatment and let him park in the yellow area.

HH does the same thing with our car, except we like to display images of Oprah!

bugaboo or nothing!

What's with Hoboken? This is the second random baby stroller I've seen since we moved here. The first was found hanging from a tree on Madison, and now here's Big Red chillin' on Jackson. Wouldn't it make more sense to donate your old stroller to the Hoboken Shelter, rather than subjecting us to your modern public art display?

To donate your used baby strollers, or anything else for that matter, click the link below. A few weeks ago my partner and I did a big spring edit of our clothes, the bulk of which we donated to the Hoboken Shelter, which helps feed and clothe the homeless. Click the link, and on the left hand side, look for the word 'donating' for more information:

swim with the fishes

Ordinary sewer drain? Let's have a closer look, shall we:

It seems as though we have here a very interesting type of drain, that warns the friendly citizens of northwester Hoboken NOT to dump any waste products into the sewer, for fear of poisoning our waterways. Hey, at least we know whatever goes own the drain gets deposited directly into the Hudson River without any type of treatment or filtering. Joy!

Just how old is our sewer system again?

steel staircases to the sky

On Jefferson, just south of 7th Street, are a row of very unique townhouse style homes, that feature bottom floor garages, and interesting steel staircase details on both sides of the building. Mostly made of brick, with green ivy filling in the cracks. Quite charming, and sort of scary at the same time.

mobilator to the rescue

Mild mannered GMC? Let's take another look!

Upon further inspection, it becomes clear this unassuming van is really the home of another local hero- The Mobilator: Behold his awesome power:

He doesn't use a red phone, or a symbol in the sky. However, if you need him in a hurry, just pick up your phone and dial the # written on the passenger door of his love machine:

Mobilator: The only 1982 GMC I've ever seen with wings...

Anyone know the exact type of model/ year this car is? Email me please: hoboken.hero@yahoo.com

compulsive stray cat feeders

Allow me to introduce you to these two lovely ladies. As long time locals of the hood, they've stood by during the recent and ongoing transformation of their once quiet Hoboken neighborhood. Both, I'm sure, are confident, determined women with iron constitutions, and strong religious convictions. Daily rituals include walking back and forth to the local Shoprite supermarket, wearing sassy outfits to excite the local construction workers, swigging back a case or two (each) of ice cold Coors Light tall boys, and wasting their social security checks feeding stray cats along Jackson Street.

How did this unique relationship begin? We will never know. I don't quite understand the need to feed stray cats. The world is their oyster! They don't need us for sustenance! Stray cats are intelligent animals that can take care of themselves. Ladies, if I may- please stop spending your savings on cat food. Wouldn't that money be much more useful if you put it towards buying some chic new handkerchiefs to help protect your hair when it rains?

I share in my grandfathers assessment of stray cats: "Speed bumps, all of 'em." Well, that's what he used to say, until one showed up on his doorstep. It wasn't long before he turned to the dark side and began feeding the little guy. Six months later and that allergy ticking time bomb had taken my place as the new favorite grandchild. I'm currently working my way back up to #1 status. It's been tough, but I'm determined.

maybe it was just windy?

Do you see what I see?

How about now??

Now???

Maybe Dad thought the little one needed more exercise?
